History and Mission
The Jackson Award Committee was established in 1977 to provide recognition to persons who have given long and outstanding service to the American Society of Mammalogists. The committee evaluates nominations received and makes a recommendation of a recipient to the Board of Directors. The award need not be given every year (Gill and Wozencraft, 1994).

Responsibilities
The Chair of the Jackson Award Committee sends copy for a notice asking for nominations to the Journal Editor of the Journal of Mammalogy by 1 September each year. The Chair should update text to reflect most recent recipients of the award.

Committee Notes:

The H. H. T. Jackson Award was established in 1977 for the purpose of providing recognition to individuals who have rendered long and outstanding service to the American Society of Mammalogists. Previous awardees are William B. Davis, William H. Burt, Bryan P. Glass, J. Knox Jones, Jr., Oliver Pearson, Sydney Anderson, Murray Johnson, Donald F. Hoffmeister, Karl F. Koopman, Marie A. Lawrence, John O. Whitaker, Jr., B. J. Verts, J. Mary Taylor, Robert J. Baker, James A. Lackey, Don E. Wilson, Clyde Jones, Gordon L. Kirkland, Jr., Elmer C. Birney, Richard W. Thorington, Jr., Suzanne B. McLaren, H. Duane and Dahnelle Smith, Hugh H. Genoways, and David M. Leslie, Jr. Nominations and letters of support should contain specific information on the nominee's service to the ASM. A complete nomination package includes: (1) a nomination letter, (2) a recent version of the nominee’s curriculum vitae, and (3) no more than five letters of support. All of these materials should be incorporated by the nominator into a single PDF document and transmitted via e-mail to ensure receipt by Michael R. Willig (michael.willig@uconn.edu) no later than 15 March.

The Committee Chair receives nominations and supporting materials and forwards copies of the materials to committee members for their evaluation by 1 April.

After the committee has reached a decision regarding the nomination, the Chair forwards that decision to the President. In addition, the chair provides a brief description of the qualifications of the nominee, including a recent curriculum vitae, to the President, who subsequently disseminates these materials to the Board for consideration.

The President polls the board for approval of the nominee.

By 1 May, the Chair should contact the person responsible for producing the plaque presented to the recipient at the annual banquet.

The Chair presides over a committee meeting at the Annual Meeting, presents the report of the Committee to the Members Meeting, and announces the recipient of the award at the Annual Banquet.
