Major duties: The incumbent serves as a staff specialist in the Division of Scientific Authority. The initiate and conduct complex technical assessments, status surveys, and studies on plants and animals in trade; provide advice and technical assistance on conservation, management, and protection projects over seen by the Division as well as prepares policy recommendations; and advise Service-related offices on information relevant to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). They will prepare scientifically defensible reports, briefing materials, news releases and not technical articles. They will coordinate with other Federal, State agencies and other non governmental organizations to assess various aspects of the impact of international trade on conservation of an assortment of animals and plant species. The incumbent will also recommend proposed listings decisions and ensure the publics involvement in decisions by preparing and publishing notices in the Federal Register.

Vice President/Director - Natural Resources Management

Position requires an MS or PhD in biology, botany, zoology, wildlife biology or related environmental/natural science discipline and 10+ years of experience. Prior consulting experience is a must. Candidates must have a strong applied technical knowledge of, and management experience with regulatory compliance projects focusing upon NEPA (EA, EIS), CWA (§404 and §401 permitting), and ESA (§7 and §10), and be familiar with the compliance and planning needs of agencies including DoD, FERC, and state DOTs. Experience should reflect capabilities in designing and managing linear corridor projects, private real property development, and federal resource conservation programs.
Responsibilities will include project and client management, business development, providing Group leadership, overall managerial direction and administration, and guidance to meet established financial standards. This role carries the responsibility of Group Strategic Planning, overall Group productivity, profitability, client satisfaction, and quality of work. Project Manager – Natural Resources Management, NEPA or ESA Specialist
BHE Environmental, Inc., a multidisciplinary environmental consulting firm, is hiring an experienced project manager in Knoxville, TN; Cincinnati, OH; or Columbus, OH; to support its growing natural resources management group.
In this position, the successful candidate will combine project management and field biology experience to respond to client needs in renewable energy, utility, land management, military and other industries. The successful candidate will manage projects from proposal preparation through project closeout, including scope, schedule, and budget, while contributing technical expertise to the project team. The successful candidate can expect to design scientific and environmental compliance programs, collect and analyze data, write reports, interact with clients, coordinate with agencies, and develop new business opportunities as part of the required duties.
To qualify for this position the successful candidate must have prior success managing multiple projects of at least $50k, as well as experience in Endangered Species Act (ESA) compliance or preparation of NEPA documentation, including Environmental Impact Statements. Minimum requirements also include a BS, MS or PhD degree and substantial experience in field biology. Effective written and oral communication skills are mandatory for success and must be clearly demonstrated in the interview process. Travel will be required.
Prior work with a consulting firm is strongly preferred. Expertise in utility-scale renewable power generation, electric transmission, wetland and stream mitigation, statistics, Army environmental regulations, or botany would complement current staff skills. Project Management certification (e.g., PMP) would be a plus.

M.S. Graduate Research Assistant - Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory at Southern Illinois University Carbondale
Position Description: Beginning 15 August 2009, a M.S. Graduate Research Assistant position is open working under Dr. Clay Nielsen (SIUC) and Dr. Karl Didier (Wildlife Conservation Society) and in conjunction with the Wildlife Conservation Society and Argentine collaborators to identify and prioritize new biodiversity conservation areas in Patagonia, Argentina. This project has the following objectives to which, depending on project needs and student interests, the student may contribute:
1. To model the distributions of select plant and animal species; these modeled distributions will be input into conservation planning software. The student would gain valuable experience in statistical spatial modeling techniques and software such as MaxEnt or General Additive Models.
2. To produce other spatial data layers important for prioritizing conservation areas, such as vulnerability analyses (e.g., vulnerability of areas to climate change or land conversion) or costs for conserving areas (e.g., purchase costs or income from alternative uses).
3. To run prioritization analyses using the conservation planning software (Marxan) and compare various scenarios for implementing networks of conservation areas (e.g., options for scheduling implementation of areas under climate change scenarios). The student would gain valuable experience in conservation planning and spatial analyses.
As part of their Research Assistantship, the successful applicant will also be responsible for maintenance of a 20-unit computer laboratory at SIUC. Duties will include basic diagnostics of computer systems, server maintenance, software loading/removal, and other associated tasks. This Research Assistant position was funded internally through SIUC for the express fulfillment of computer laboratory duties, and will comprise a significant portion of the successful applicant's time in addition to coursework and research activities. The successful applicant will obtain a M.S. in Zoology (with an emphasis in Wildlife Ecology) from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Qualifications: The successful applicant must have: (1) obtained a B.S. in wildlife management, ecology, zoology, geography, or a related field; (2) earned a grade point average >3.2/4.0 or equivalent; (3) scored >1100 on the verbal (or equivalently well on the TOEFL) and quantitative sections of the GRE; (4) considerable experience working with large geospatial databases and GIS; (5) superior quantitative skills; (6) an ability to work with many collaborators from differing agencies; and (7) a thorough knowledge of aforementioned computer laboratory maintenance tasks. Strong skills in speaking and writing Spanish are preferred.
